Designing Virtual Worlds

I was talking about reading this book the other day, and that I had emailed the author about how the designers of Lineage 2 could have taken some real lessons from it.  It got me thinking of all the things that were bad or poorly redesigned, and gosh there were a lot.

You could go years without ever getting an item that dropped from a mob, that you could equip.  Past the early levels (1-10) the chance you would get ANY weapon or armor drop was next to nil, and it being correct for  your class in the odd event it did happen, was extremely slim as well.

There was no rhyme or reason in the gearing system.  Weapons weren’t pinned for certain classes so you’d get stupid combinations like a mage using dual-swords or a bow.

Normal quests were not worth doing, for items, exp, or money, with maybe 2 exceptions or “well I’ll be in this area anyway”.  They didn’t give any worthwhile exp (it was often the same as killing 2 mobs), never gave worthwhile items to equip, and often gave less money than it cost to complete the quest. In some cases, the MORE items you turned in, the LESS money per item  you got!

The game wasn’t designed in such a way to deter scams, and the GMs did not care if people WERE scamming.  I can’t find my example images at this time, but here are a few common scams based of game problems.

  1.  The game font made a lowercase L and an uppercase I look exactly the same.  For example Ellie looked the same as EIIie or ElIie.  Exactly the same.   People would create a character of someone and message their friends and clannies and ask them to see a weapon or armor.  They would then never give it back.
  2. Lower level items often looked exactly like higher level items.  A grade crystals looked exactly like worthless Soul Ore (if I remember right) with a difference in price or something like 2,000 vs 10. People would set up sell shops with the cheap stuff labeled with the good stuffs name.
  3. That leads me to Sell Shops.  You could type whatever you wanted in your store name to fool people.  “Selling spiritshots cheap!” the store could say.  You open the store with “sell” in your head and see shots at 10a! Wow what a deal!  You pick to buy as much as possible and.. “you just sold 5,000 spiritshots”.  Wait, what?  Oops, it was a BUY store labeled as a SELL store and you just sold all your stuff for super cheap.  Oops.  One would say “just pay attention” I would say “design  your dumb game better” or severely punish people trying this tactic.
  4. Dwarven craft shops had a problem where the cost to craft an item wasn’t visible in the window past a certain numbers of characters.  You could see 1,000 for example, but not the renaming ,000.  A craft would oops, cost 1 million adena instead of 1,000.
  5. And finally (for right now) you would probably never see any of the high level content.  The requirements to kill ANY of the major raid bosses were so such it was likely to never happen.  It was designed for 200+ people, which on the NA servers, was never going to happen.

Heroes of the Storm

I played 15 games last night to get the flamesaber mount in Heroes of the Storm, and I’m not sure if I like the game.  I played Jaina and ran myself OOM a lot and the click to move interface is annoying. I know I did it in Lineage 2 but that’s old.  I can’t decide though. I may try it again or something. Played with Tank, Ravenshield, and Sage.

Poor PW Shield

Thanks to the Chemical Crown Valentines Event, I’ve been playing all my healers hoping to get that DAMN LOVE ROCKET that I haven’t seen in 8 years.  UGH.

Anyway I noticed that the Mistweaver’s spell have been upgraded and are beautiful now!  That being said, I miss the old rotation, I really liked the flow.  Soothing mist, which made surging instant cast, 3 of those and you had enough chi to pop uh, that other spell that made your other heals get stronger, then more surging.  Renewing mist to sprinkle over your team then Uplift to boost it into another heal.  It was so calming to heal with MW.  I haven’t learned the current model well enough but it looks like they swept soothing into the casted spell which channels automatically and uplift is now vivify? Not sure.

Anyway the LOOK of the spells is what got me.  Here is a mistweaver:

It’s harder to tell when it’s not in motion, but it’s these curving tendrils of sparkly green power that spins and glitters as you channel.  It’s so pretty!  It use to be a hazy beam of straight green.

The other healers are the same, as far as I can tell, but paladins already had a flash of light on the target with a very satisfying sound effect, shamans have the water dump and splash of Riptide with other water noises from casting.

But, PW shield for priests is still boring.  I noticed mages get a very decent shield upgrade

with a similar one for fire (and frost I assume)

but PW shield is still the boring old faint halo of almost nothing.  We were told we couldn’t have divine aegis bubbles because it was ‘too busy’ but I don’t think that’s a reason now, what with DK’s summoning FROST WYRMS and paths of frost, mages casting METEORS and massive ice attacks, and demon hunters turning into basically the Lineage 2 kamael transform.  There’s no reason it still needs to look like a dragons butthole.

Give me some Skin

After the Mei winter skin thing, we are getting a Chinese New Year event where we got a number of fantastic skins.  Mei finally got something new, Winston, Zen, Sym, and so on.  People were talking about who didn’t get something or who still has bad skins overall (Zarya cough cough).

The skins tend to fall in categories of base recolors (same outfit, different colors),  completely new outfits (legendaries), and base but with cool stuff (summer skins, Mei’s xmas one).  Every time a group of heroes gets a new thing, some others feel left out.  I’m counting based on the unique look of the items, and grouping the counts into these categories.

For instance, here’s a run down as I see it at this time.

Ana:   Base, Amari, Wagjet.  Most of her skins are variations of the base skins, and her Captain Amari.  At this point I’d say she has 3

Bastion: Base skin, Gearbot, Steambot.  He barely has 3 as they all look pretty much the same.  Some of the details are really nice though.

D.va:  Base, Junebug, Scavenger, Palanquin.  4, but barely.

Genji: Base, young Genji, Nomad.  3.5 with the .5 going to Oni.

Hanzo: Base, Wolf, Young.  Halloween skin is a decent base update. 3.5

Junkrat:  Base, Jester, Scarecrow, Junkenstein.  4.

Lucio:  Base, Hockey, Summer, Frog, 4.

Mccree:  Base, Gambler, Mystery man.  3.

Mei:  Base, Yeti, Firefighter, Luna.  4.5 with the .5 going to the winter skin (because, sigh, ice block change)

Mercy:  Base, Valkyrie, Imp, Witch.  4.  I do love all her skins though, ALL OF THEM!

Pharah:  Base, Thunderbird, Winter, Mechaqueen, Security Chief.  5.

Reaper: Base, Reyes, Halloween, Nevermore, El Blanco.  5.5 with the .5 going to his winter skin.

Reinhardt: Base, Blackhardt, Balderich, Helmetless, Wujing. 5.  Almost counts as a 6 in my book because his heavy armor IS SO AMAZING!

Roadhog: Base, Winter, Toa, Mako, Halloween, Bajie.  6!

S76:  Base, Young, Night Ops, Daredevil.  4, but I don’t like half of them.

Sombra:  Base, legendary, Los Muertos.  3 but she is the newest character.

Symmetra:  Base, Architech, Goddess. 3.5 with the .5 going to her halloween skin which changes her turrets to little eyeballs.

Torbjorn:  Base, Deadlock, Santaclad, Blackbeard.  4.

Tracer:  Base, T.Racer, Slipstream, Summer, Punk, Winter. 6.

Widowmaker: Base, Odile, Halloween, Noire.  4.

Winston:  Base, Frogston, Explorer, Yeti, Wokong.  5.

Zarya:  Base, Arctic, Cybergoth, Summer. 4 but no one seems to like the Goth so it feels more like 3.

Zenyatta:  Base, Djinnyatta, Winter, Sunyatta, Sanzang. 5.

I think Widowmaker (curse her soul), is due for another good one, Symmetra, Ana, and Zarya. Zarya before anyone.

Holystab, 5 years later

I randomly logged onto my horde priest today for some reason.  No one I remember from horde is really on these days, I haven’t heard from Seagaer in probably 4-5 years, Ladiesman in 4, Fratricide in probably just as long, etc.

But then Holystab not only messages me, but remembers me.  I found him exceedingly obnoxious back in 2012 but 5 years is  a long time.  I consented to trade battletags (but not real id) and we’ll see if he has grown up or not.

Last week we’ve been doing AV but it’s been next to impossible to get the same queue with everyone, and I think I’ve lost 90% or more of my games.  Losing isn’t so bad, but I don’t need to group up, repeatedly drop queue and requeue for 30 minutes, wait 10 mins to get into queue only to end up with 2-4 other people and lose.  I can lose much faster by myself since we’re basically playing alone anyway.

The other problem of course is we’re not all strat callers.  Miz does it, Zek, Krienn, maybe Dooker.  I don’t.  So when it’s my group with Bobos (who often doesn’t join vent) and Xerk, vent is absolutely silent and I don’t care for that.  If I do say what I’m doing it’s met with silence which is uncomfortable.

Additionally splitting groups is annoying because others feel left out.  Oh you won your game, cool well, the 3 of us are getting destroyed so, that’s fun.  The same thing happens when people break off to do mythics, that’s only 1 tank, 1 healer, and 3 dps.  Certain people seem to be the favorites who end up getting picked first as well.

I know we’re trying hard to include everyone though but it’s looking like it might no longer be doable in AV.
